Oeuvre
The usual - driving around, bowling, the occasional acid flashback.

Forreal.

this is an interesting corollary of ‘straw man argument’— the ‘straw man statement’.

Well, first of all, to correct matters — yes, you are the 99%.  You are not part of the 1% who own the lion’s share of the world’s wealth and political influence.  And that is the point: you have worked desperately hard for your success, and you should be proud of it, but perhaps — perhaps — the struggle you have found yourself in, just to reach the starting line that many more wealthy and less deserving than you were born with, is not “how it’s supposed to work.” Perhaps that is simply the ideology that late capitalism cultivates in order to protect the powerful positions of those who work as hard as you do, but toward very different — less generous — ends.  Perhaps, unwittingly, through your perseverance you are reinforcing the very system that has required the very pain that you ennoble here.  Perhaps, just perhaps, that pain isn’t necessary, and perhaps the system that mandates that pain isn’t either.  And, for the record — I’m in the same position as you, working my ass off in a 20 hour job and earning a full scholarship to obtain the education, debt-free, that the state once promised me but never delivered.  Perhaps something better is possible.
